WHAT IS A CROWN?

Dental crowns are tooth restorations to strengthen and protect teeth, or improve shape and/or appearance. Crowns can cover an entire tooth, or just a portion of the tooth. The most common type of crown, a “traditional” crown, covers the entire tooth, while a “onlay” crown only covers a portion.

Crowns are typically placed on teeth that are broken, worn, or decayed. Crowns can be made from materials such as metal, gold, ceramic or porcelain. Some crowns are even made from various combinations of these materials.

Typcially a dentist will have to prepare a tooth for a crown then prepare a model of the mouth to send off to a lab where the crown will then be made and sent back to the dental office. After that the dentist will place the crown onto the tooth and hope that both the color and shape of the crown fit and look good. At GBR Dental, Single-visit dentistry with CEREC gives our doctors complete control over every restoration we make. You don't have to worry if your crown will fit properly, or if the shade will match when it gets back from the lab. We complete the entire process in our office in one visit.

GETTING A CROWN WITH CEREC

The procedure for placement of a Cerec restoration is very simple. The first step is to remove all decay from the tooth. The doctor will then shape the tooth in preparation to take a digital picture. Once this image is captured, the tooth will appear as a 3D model on the computer screen. This allows the doctor to design the restoration right in front of you. Once the design is completed, the Cerec will mill the restoration. You can actually watch this process if you would like. When the restoration is finished milling, the doctor will place the restoration. The entire process should take less than two hours.

HOW LONG DO CROWNS LAST?

On average, crowns generally last anywhere from 5 to 15 years. The lifespan of the crown is effected by normal “wear and tear”, and daily oral hygiene practices and habits. Various activities such as chewing ice or teeth-grinding can shorten the lifespan of a crown. Make sure you are getting routine exams to check on the quality of your crowns!

No Temporary.
No Messy Impressions.
ONE EASY APPOINTMENT.

The Cerec PrimeScan is our office’s personal “robot” that allows us to make and deliver crowns in the same day! It is the most advanced scanner in digital dentistry and greatly simplifies restoration procedures.

After the tooth is cleaned and shaped, our Cerec PrimeScan creates a 3D model of the whole mouth. This advanced technology eliminates the need for messy impressions and ensures our patients receive high quality results. Once the design is complete, our Cerec robot begins work by milling the restoration. This 3D printing process is very cool to watch! Once the restoration is complete, the doctor will place the crown, in the same day.

There’s no need fora temporary crown placement, or spending more time to make another appointment! The entire process takes a few hours, but can definitely be completed in one, easy appointment.
